I can also understand why the devs may not be making genders a priority. While I can understand your desire to unlock the genders of characters I cannot let it slide when you say the only major difference is the gene augmentations. The marines are more versatile but standard procedure amongst most chapters is surgical strikes to cut the head off of the enemy leadership.

The sisters are called when you pretty much need every shred of heresy, withcraft, and mutation scorched to ash (along with pretty much everything else) and the faith of a single sister probably exceeds that of a single astartes as they are quite literally raised by the space church. While they may appear similar superficially the differences begin to grow as you look closer. Meanwhile space marines are gene augmented, bearing power armor that is modified to their stature and enhanced physique, weapons to match and have a much broader range on their adherence to the imperial cult. As normal humans the sisters are provided power armor made to human standards, the same with their bolters and are essentially fanatical preachers of the imperial cult. The nuns with guns are essentially the militant arm of the space church. While marines may be war monks they answer ultimately only to their chapter masters and, under threat of duress, the inquisition. The only major difference is they aren't genetically modified. They have similar armor, they use similar weapons, they are a militant order, fight against the same enemies and they both serve the emperor fanatically. Space Marines are not even humans anymore really. They both use guns? I suppose that makes them basically the same. If you knew anything about 40k lore you wouldnt say that.
